Overview

The St Kitts and Nevis Robotics Teams Presents a Robotics After School Programme – RASP.  Geared towards having youth compete International at the First Global Robotics Competition – Lego League. This is an annual event starting August 2019.

I. Mission

The mission of Robotic After School Programme – RASP is to: Help youths in St Kitts and Nevis, with emphasis on at-risk youth, by building confidence, character and acquire the skills needed to grow into productive, civic minded and responsible adults. This will develop, educational, vocational and character development of youths exposed to crime and violence in their communities.

Also is in keeping with FIRST global robotics mission, RASP also believes in inspiring youths to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

“To transform the youths of St Kitts and Nevis by engaging them in science and technology through Robotics developments and competitions”III.Methodology To engage young children in exciting robotics competition through adequate mentorship while leading them to become leaders as well as well-rounded contributors in St Kitts and Nevis.

III. Goals/ Objectives

  1. To engage students in after school robotics development with an end goal of International Competition.
  2. To target at risk youths in violence prone communities in St Kitts and Nevis.
  3. To create responsible and well-rounded citizen by providing exposure and adequate mentorship.

Procedures/Scope of Work

In light of the nature of the programme, which is an after school programme that involves tutoring and mentoring, There has to be specific objectives that guide this initiative.  

The following specific objectives would be: 

  1. To provide exciting technical challenges that will develop interest in the STEM field.  
  2. Teach critical thinking and problem solving skills inherent in Engineering design, development and testing.   
  3. Provide the opportunity to design, program and operate robots consistent with the FIRST Lego League construct and the First Tech Challenge Competition.   
  4. Provide the youths with the opportunity to present their robot designs and their new insights into technology before judges who are active in the field of Information Technology. 

 The programme is designed to cater for young people between the ages 10 – 16

First Lego League Robotics – FLL

Group One will be exposed to the First Lego League Robotics – FLL Competition training using the Mindcraft EV3 kits. This would prepare the Group for the First Lego League Robotics Competition in Detroit Michigan. Where over 50 countries meet every year to compete but most of all to form relationships, networking and to engage with other cultures from all walks of life.  

In addition, the STEM curriculum would be used as the work plan and work bench along with the EV3 Design Engineering Project application for both students and mentor. These material would adequately keep student actively engaged and focused.  

 For the Lego league youths will be chosen based on those exposed to the highest risk factors within the target communities. These youths will be assessed based on attendance to school, involvements, demonstrated interests, attitudes towards authority, academic performance history, domestic arrangement among other factors such as family history of violence etc. Thanks to the St Kitts and Nevis Robotics Team.

Evaluation 

The Robotics After School Programme – RASP will be evaluated to find out the following (Carlson and O’Neal-McElrath):

  • To find out if the hypothesis was right. Did you do what you set out to do?
  • To determine if the methods specified were used, and if the objectives were met.
  • To find out if an impact was made on the identified need.
  • To obtain feedback from the people served and other members of the community.
  • To maintain control over the project (evaluations often take place at various points in the project allowing for corrections).
  • To make changes in the program mid-stream, if necessary, to ensure the program’s success.

First Global Team Saint Kitts and Nevis 2019

Hey Guys!

Not ONCE, or TWICE but THREE times St. Kitts and Nevis Robotics team is back again at First Global Robotics Challenge 2019 as a collective of fresh, innovative, technological leaders of our upcoming generation.

Our team is made up of 5 brilliant minds in love with the field of technology, driven toward all new and upcoming developments in our federation. We believe that the future is now and we are the ones who shape it into what it could be. This is the era that minds like ours will capitalize on opportunities like First Global and make monumental changes all around the world. Our main goal is to further involve our nation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The overall make-up of our robot’s hardware components is a result of the cooperation of all members of the team but specific components of its development can be split into two primary groups.The Engineering Faction consists of our robot’s Driver Jeremy Warner, its Controller Jordan Prentice and fellow Lead Engineer Ainka Saunders. Representing the Programming faction, our Team Captain and Spokesperson Abion Stevens works alongside fellow Programmer Vivisha Wattley to code and test the functions of the robot. While these individuals serve as the federation’s international team at the 2019 First Global Challenge, it would be an injustice not to mention the greatly appreciated assistance of every comrade incorporated into the local team who’s aid and time within the development phase also contributed to a considerable amount of effort used to create a well-built competitive robot.

Competing at the First Global Challenge will give us the grand experience of being there first hand, to participate and observe all the amazing minds of robotics around the world. Also to expand our very own minds and help shape the future of robotics.  “The Future Is At Hand”
